In cotton irrigation, the irrigation cycle doesn’t simply stop when the main watering schedule ends. One of the important final steps in the cotton irrigation process is what we call a “flush.” And that’s exactly what’s happening across our cotton fields right now!

A flush refers to a light, final watering of selected paddocks, after the main irrigation period has finished. Water flows through the furrows, pushing leftover salts and nutrients deeper into the soil. This improves soil health and prepares the ground for the next stage of the season. Not every paddock requires a ‘flush’, certain areas are carefully selected based on several factors; soil moisture levels being one of the main considerations.

A flush also helps settle the soil after months of irrigation and supports the final stages of crop maturity. While it’s a smaller application of water compared to regular irrigations earlier in the season, it still plays an important role in maintaining paddock condition and supporting the long-term productivity of the soil.

With most ‘flushes’ being completed or currently underway, this stage is a great reminder of the care and management that goes into every step of cotton production.
